To create your blog (website) you need to download and install some data files such as:

Many of these files are compressed, they are called: “Zip” files. To extract (or unzip) these compressed files you need the software: “Winzip”

winzip

What is “Winzip”?

Winzip is the most used software for compressing data files.

What are “Zip” files?

Zip files are data files that contain compressed files which ends with: “.zip”. This Zip file is the most used compression format and “Winzip” is the most used compression utility.

Why to use Zip files?

If you want to save time and disk space or if you want to make downloading software and transferring email attachments faster, you have to compress your data files into a Zip file.

To distribute files on the Internet, you have only to download one file which obtains all files. This makes the transfer faster.

When you have large files, use Winzip to compress these files into smaller Zip files. This saves you disk space and you can extract (or unzip) them when needed.

Why to use Winzip?

If you want to store your files in a Zip file, or to access the files in a Zip file, you need a compression utility such as Winzip. Winzip makes it easy for you to work with archives. Winzip features a standard point-and-click, drag-and-drop interface for extracting, adding, viewing, running, deleting and testing files in Zip files. First-time users can choose to use the included Winzip Wizard.

How to install Winzip?

To install Winzip on your computer:

  1. Download the software from Winzip, following the instructions on that site. Note the name and the folder of the downloaded file.
  2. When the download is complete, open the Windows Explorer on your computer and navigate to the folder on your hard drive where you saved the file. Double-click the downloaded file. After a dialog box opens, click: Setup.
  3. Another dialog box will appear and ask you where to install Winzip (the dafault location is: c:Program FilesWinzip). Choose where to install the program and click: Ok. The Installation Wizard will start.
  4. By clicking Next will bring up a dialog box prompting you to accept or decline the terms of the license agreement. If you accept the terms, click: Yes.
  5. During the installation, you will be asked to choose between various options, many of which depend on your personal preferences. When in doubt, select the default or recommended Option.

After you installed Winzip you will be able to launch Winzip from the Start menu or desktop.

How to open a Zip file?

Compressed or archieved files may contain many separate files in one large archive, which often take up less space than the original files. Before you can read or run all the separate files and programs, you must use an archiving program to extract the files from the archive.

After installing Winzip, you can open a Zip file by double-clicking it or by starting Winzip and choosing: “Unzip or install from existing Zip file” in the Winzip Wizzard. (If the Winzip Wizzard does not open by default when you start Winzip, just click the Wizzard button in the toolbar). The Winzip Wizzard will guide you trough the process of unzipping your file.

How to create a Zip file?

To create a Zip file:

  • Open Winzip in the Winzip Wizzard mode. You will be asked “What do you want to do?”. Simply select: “Create a new Zip file” and click Next. The Winzip Wizzard will guide you trough the entire process.

If you want, you can also try the Winzip Classic interface. The Classic interface offers many advanced features that are not available in the Winzip Wizzard. Using the Classic interface, you can split large files into smaller parts to overcome email and other size limits.

  • View, extract and run individual files in a Zip file
  • Remove files from an existing Zip file
  • Encrypt your confidential files so that they can’t be used without password
  • and much more

To try the Classic interface, simply click the Winzip Classic button in the Winzip Wizzard. Program help is available for every aspect of Winzip Classic operation.

Now I ask you: Do you understand why it is so important to use Winzip? Feel free to leave a comment! Thanks!
